New Zealand - Allocation of 24-30GHz Spectrum

Further to Alphabet Newsletter issued on 21st October 2025, the New Zealand Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) released the consultation results regarding the allocation of spectrum in the 24-30GHz band on 7th April 2026.

The RSM's decisions are as follows:

- Lower 28GHz (27.5-28.35GHz): Long-term coexistence of mobile and satellite services is permitted on a geographic basis. Mobile communications will be prioritized within cities, and satellite services will be prioritized outside cities. A limited time window will be established for existing pre-built satellite gateway stations to apply for licenses; after this window, no new satellite applications will be accepted within cities.

- Assignment of 26GHz and lower 28GHz for mobile: Deferred until 2028-2030, once use cases mature, and allocated on a non-national basis.

- The RSM is now accepting long-term license applications for existing earth stations (27.5-30GHz) until 22nd May 2026. There will be a pause on other licensing in this band where new applications will not be accepted in this time. This is to ensure that these existing licenses are processed ahead of expiry.

- Applications of new gateways/feeder link and user terminals/Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) Earth stations and terminals can be submitted from 8th June 2026.
